Bear's Breeches is a clump-forming perennial with large deeply lobed thistle-like foliage.  The small snapdragon like flowers are enclosed by a spiny purple bracts arranged in vertical rows on large flower spikes from late spring to mid summer.  Flowers best in well-drained soils and appreciates afternoon shade in the South.
