Red Buckeye is a clumping deciduous shrub with an irregular crown and showy erect panicles of red to red-orange flowers in summer.  The shiny dark green palmate leaves have unremarkable fall colors.  Black buckeye seeds follow the flowers and ripen in fall.  Flowers best in rich, moist soils.  Drought intolerant.

Aesculus pavia are an important source of nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds when food is scarce, and attracts the Ruby-throated Hummingbird in particular.  The seeds and bark are toxic to mammals.
